The Only Constant
Psalm 62:5-8
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”
- Psalm 62:5-6
My favorite thing about God is that He is constant. He never has changed and never will. This trait of His is contrary to anything we experience, because the only constant we know of in this world is change. So many things change every single day. Weather changes, our location changes, nature changes, seasons change, jobs change, bodies change, habits change, traditions change, people change, and we change. The change we experience never stops, and this can cause such hardship, confusion, and anxiety. There is only one thing that does not change and that is our God. He is the great I Am, for Hebrews 13:8 tells us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Especially in this current time of uncertainty, this is a truth we must hold onto. Many different things in our lives are being taken away right now and putting us in uncomfortable and hard situations, but it shows us that God is the One who remains. Nothing is guaranteed in this life except for Him. It is in His nature to remain the same. He is a rock and a mighty fortress that can never be shaken.
Romans 8:38-39 says:
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about
tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to
separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What a promise. Nothing can ever separate us from the love of God. He is the only constant when everything else is taken away. Our world is changing, but He is not. Our world is chaotic, but He is not. Our world is being shaken, but He is not. He will never change, He will always provide rest, and He will never be shaken. In Him alone can we find our true rest, because He alone is steadfast. He is all we need. In Him, we have more than enough. We deserve nothing and He has given us everything, for He has given us life. This is a truth that cannot be shaken no matter the unpredictable obstacle or storm thrown our way. Let us run to the One who never changes and find immense rest, hope, and comfort in this truth.
